Why Does My Kid Keep Picking Their Skin?

Maybe your kid always has a scab they're messing with. Maybe your teenager goes into the bathroom to pop one pimple and comes out 30 minutes later with half their face red.

Maybe it's their cuticles. Their arms. Their scalp. Any tiny bump or rough spot they can find.

You've probably said, "Stop picking. You're making it worse."

They probably know.

When skin picking becomes repetitive and really hard to stop, it may be excoriation disorder, also called skin-picking disorder or dermatillomania. It's a type of body-focused repetitive behavior (BFRB).

Why can't they just stop?

Because skin picking isn't simply a bad habit.

Some kids pick almost automatically while watching TV, studying, scrolling, or lying in bed. Others actively search their skin for something that feels rough, uneven, clogged, or "wrong."

And yes, the picking itself can feel satisfying. Getting rid of that one bump or rough spot can feel good for a second, even when they're really unhappy with what their skin looks like afterward.

What about acne picking?

Picking a pimple occasionally is pretty normal. What's different is when your teenager spends a long time scanning their face, squeezing tiny bumps, digging at pores, or reopening spots that were already healing.

At that point, acne may be giving them something to pick, but the picking itself has become part of the problem.

Should I keep telling them to stop?

Probably not.

It's incredibly hard not to comment when you can literally see your kid damaging their skin. But if reminders worked, they probably would have stopped already.

Constant monitoring can quickly turn into arguments, embarrassment, and hiding.

The goal is to figure out the picking, not spend all day policing it.

What actually helps?

We have behavioral treatments specifically for BFRBs. Habit Reversal Training (HRT) helps kids recognize their pulling patterns and learn ways to interrupt them. The Comprehensive Behavioral Model (ComB) helps us figure out what's driving the picking in the first place.

That's important because a teenager who picks their arms without realizing it while studying may need something very different from a teenager who spends 30 minutes inspecting their face in a mirror.

When should I get help?

If you're seeing bleeding, sores, scarring, hiding, shame, long picking sessions, or repeated attempts to stop that aren't working, it's worth getting an evaluation.

You don't have to wait until their skin is badly damaged.
